DARK MEAT RITUALIZE SOME FREEDOM

Dmfbgweb_4

If you haven't already heard Dark Meat is a 17-piece psychedelic rock collective from Athens, Georgia who sound like the Stooges meets Crazy Horse meets Albert Ayler -- double drums, shredding guitars, jazz bursts, gospel vocals and marching band horns! Dark Meat lives together, eats together and makes music together, the true meaning of collective - several members live in Orange Twin, a 100-acre sustainable-living eco-village, where members farm, do bio-diesel conversion and host shows at their amphitheater. For three years, Dark Meat has thrilled crowds with earth-shaking, hallelujah-roaring performances throughout the South. Now, we are ready to let a true Southern gem shine.

BLOC PARTY WEEK PART 3

SUNDAY
With all the terrible Bloc Party remixes, covers, and mash ups out there (you know who you are), these first two take the prize for 2007.  We're almost sorry to give them more play here but the stink is already out there.  Finger snapper 'n' looper KT Tunstall seems like a nice enough person, and it was sweet of her to shout out "The Prayer" in The New York Times and to any reporter in 100 yards.  But this is laughably flaccid and desperate.  Of course at least she's not Fergie.  Death to DJ Schmolli, conjurer of this nugget of pure evil.

The next two aren't necessary bad but don't add much to the dialogue.  Perennial Bloc Party opening act Final Fantasy does an anemic but sweet enough love version of "This Modern Love" and Slowbear The Great from Norwich/Colchester (sounds like a terrible place mate!) does "Banquet" as nice-guy lullaby of harmonies, systematically removing every last bit of sex from the song.

Final Fantasy - This Modern Love (Bloc Party cover)
Slowbear The Great - Banquet (Bloc Party cover)

BLOC PARTY WEEK PART 2

SATURDAY
Today's a bit of a clearing house of some of the better mixes that leaked out all over the internet and into dance sets around the world.  Villains are an LA party machine, revving up tracks like "Hunting For Witches" into full-on bangers.  Ohio turntablist Ruckus Roboticus (check out his great album here) brings a M/A/R/R/S-styled cut and paste version of the same song, pushing in odd sounds and creating a fun house of sonics. Melbourne-based Miami Horror distorted synths and guitar line to bedazzle the original. Dutch electronic artist Junkie XL brings more pure emotion into A Weekend In The City's most emotional song, with passion and love.

BLOC PARTY WEEK PART 1

FRIDAY

We're starting off the final Bloc Party week of 2007 with two of the best remixes made for A Weekend In The City.  Burial's second album is even better than his great first one, breaking dubstep out of its cold cage and opening up the genre to a world of soul and emotion.  His mix of Bloc Party's "Where Is Home" could sit easily on Untrue as one of the album's more accessible tracks.  In it, Burial zeroes in on the profound isolation and sadness buried beneath the fierce anger in the best protest song of 2007.

New Norwegian space-disco cadet Diskjokke introduces himself with an epic cure for Bloc Party's woozy hangover love song.  Diskjokke's a disciple of Prins Thomas and M.A.N.D.Y, and a core of Oslo's genre-birthing club night Sunkissed.  At over ten minutes long, this is a completely original and largely instrumental composition, with great moments of 70s strobe light disco, Italo-house ecstasy, and Underworld trance house.  Kele's voice subtly pours down love at just the right moments.

Bloc Party - Sunday (DiskJokke remix)

ALY, WALK WITH ME

Ravessmall Try this - download this song from the Raveonettes new album Lust Lust Lust and walk through your city or town at night while you listen to it on your music listening devise of choice. HOLY CRAP! I know, right? Its incredible. How cool and slick do you now feel while doing this? With those sexy soft lyrics and steady bassline its all I can do to keep my feeling of awesome contained when the distortion kicks in. Give it a try.

DIPLO CONQUERS ALL

Blacklipstruckers
When the Black Lips first starting sending in music of the new stuff they were working on, one of the immediate favorite was "Veni Vidi Vici." It's just so sexy and different from what you'd expect to come from the mind of Cole Alexander. For some reason listening to this song makes us want to wear tassles. So it makes sense that when shifting through new songs to remix, Diplo would settle on this guy. Now instead of just one Cole, there's a whole choir, the vibraslap is all over the place and there is enough grunting and driving beat to make you need some alone time.

CHROMEO JAXXY TAKE OVER

Chromeomaytruongkick
Well, we all knew it had to end, but it was fun while it lasted. Today sees the end of the Chromeo Jaxxy Take Over Week. We hope it was as good for you as it was for us. Cause it was a motherlovin party over here this week. Today we present the Sinden remix of "Tenderoni" featuring Kid Sister. There's a pretty magical family with A-Track, Chromeo and Kid Sister percolating and Kid Sister's verse on this track elevates the 'roni to whole new levels. Grab this tune and pump it while you give those booty shorts one more weekend in the sun.

Today we bring you another interpretation of "Bonafied Lovin" straight from David Wolf. There's a decidedly 80s feel to this jam that makes us think that David Wolf, Dave and P have some secret understanding of Duran Duran and Dire Straights that the rest of us can only strive for. On the other hand, this Sammy Bananas remix of "Tenderoni" brings us back to the glorious 00 when you couldn't drink a beer without hearing "I got a fever. And the only prescription, is more cowbell."

By the time the seductive "step step, step step" comes in on this Dr J mashup of Missy Elliott's "Lose Control" and Chromeo's "Tenderoni," we all sort of loose our minds and start spontaneous dance parties at our desks over here in Brooklyn. Between all the Justice action and these Chromeo remixes, we've become excellent chair dancers. Like, maybe even competitive level. Making us want to bust a move on one of those rainbow light-up dance floors a la the Har Mar disco-off in the Starsky & Hutch flick is Mercurius FM's remix of "Tenderoni." We can see the neon already.

We were sitting around yesterday with MTV on Mute through Parental Control and then excitedly blasting and rewinding and rewatching Chromeo's 52/52 segments. Seriously. It was kind of completely awesome seeing Chromeo on MTV - hanging in Jimmy Jazz, doing karaoke, performing on top of a bus - the usual. We love the performance of "Bonafied Lovin" with Times Square as the backdrop, which you can check out here. We also love this DJ Eli remix of "Bonafied Lovin" with Pase Rock dropping a verse into the mix so snuggly it feels like he and Dave 1 have been dishing about triflin girls for years.

LA Riots has remixed the likes of Justice, the Cure, Mystery Jets and Kid Sister, but forgive us if we think this remix of "Bonafied Lovin" isn't one of the best things we've heard in a minute. It's sparking quite the dance party in our little corner of Brooklyn. Come back every day this week for more funked up Chromeo nuggets - along with taking over MTV's 52/52, Chromeo's taking over Jaxxy this week, and we couldn't be more ready to bust a move.

TECHNO! UNHHHH....

Fuckeduprifle3
Our favorite bloody headed, mosh inducing, epic track producing, maladjusted hard core group, Fucked Up, tried their hand at Justice's "Stress." While Justice's version makes us feel like we're in a cathedral full of robots, Fucked Up makes us want to tear the robots apart limb from limb and rebuild a Mad Max world with their insides.

MEET JUSTINE

120_2
As we anxiously await what 120 Days comes up with on their new record, they give us the Sedated Times EP. It's 7 tracks of tranced-out, head-bobbing, dance-inducing deliciousness. If you saw them on any of their shirtless tour dates, you heard "So This Is Suicide," and very likely heard this jam, "Justine." World, meet Justine.

Justice_won_us_small If Tim Burton were to score a Christmas movie about robots instead of ghoulish skeleton characters, CFCF's Six Pack remix of "Phantom" would be a shoo-in for the forlorn love scene. There's just something about the track that sounds like pale broken hearts wrapped in tinsel. Or maybe that's just us. Sticking with the removed robotic dark theme, today's "D.A.N.C.E." remix comes courtesy of Ed Ward B Dark. It's like the children's chorus is stuck inside a lava lamp and when all the fun bits congeal the Wicked Witch of the East is going to send her monkeys for you. But in the fun way.

"Waters of Nazareth" John Redden RemixCover_2 So there's the expression "too many cooks in the kitchen," but what happens when there are a shit ton of cooks on the dance floor and what they end up with something that's so inexplicably weird, yet totally auditorially edible, you can't help but bob your head while shaking it in wonder? May we serve up Justice vs Death From Above 1979 vs Shiny Toy Guns vs Young Love's "Find A Sexy Way To D.A.N.C.E." in a Luv Tek Mashup we're only beginning to understand. On Justice's †, released on Tuesday, one of our favorite tracks (carried over from the Waters of Nazareth EP) is "Waters of Nazareth." Fade_to_black_poster If you can watch Fade to Black and not get goosebumps, today might not be your day. Combining one of our favorite football season commercials and our favorite children's chorus since "Hard Knock Life," we found this little nugget, "Show Me How to D.A.N.C.E." Our Justice remix today comes from a marriage more perverse than Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra with the Parisians doing their worst to Death From Above 1979's "Blood On Our Hands". I suppose if you consider Death From Above 1979 as Canada's sleaziest rock export and Justice as Paris' sleaziest electro export, the marriage seems to be made in heaven.

Throw in some heavy breathing, some shakers, some thumping bass, some descending keyboard lines and you go from a sexy N.E.R.D. tune to a downright dirty Justice reinterpretation of "She Wants To Move." In today's "D.A.N.C.E." remix, Charlie Fanclub will have you walking around singing "Do! D! D!" all day. This remix takes each part of the song that we love so and cuts it up and puts it on repeat. In some instances under some influences, we can see dancing to this track on a loop all night long. Glow sticks would likely be involved.

When we first heard Waters of Nazareth we couldn't believe how big, fat and nasty it sounded. It sounded almost too much for headphones. Like the only way you could really understand the tune was to stand in a room filled with lots of other people and let the bass shake the floor and everyone around you in some podiatric group orgasm. When Justice got their hands on Mr. Oizo's "Nazis," the beats got fatter, the noise got sludgier and our insides got meltier. On a less sinister note, today's "D.A.N.C.E." remix comes courtesy of Tittsworth. If you giggle at the name like any good 13 year old boy would, just wait til you hear how our man Tittsworth took one of the most jubilant dance songs we've heard in eons and made it even more playful. And you didn't think it was possible.

We like to think that Justice are blazing their own unique, bass thumping, ass shaking way, but we accept the compliment on their behalf. While the bass drum thump on the original sounds more like "The Prayer," there is a certain something about Bloc Party's cover of Nelly Furtado's "Say It Right," that sounds...well...just about perfect. With Russell's signature swirling guitars and the expanded range we've come to admire in Kele's vocals, this cover takes over a life of its own from this Radio One broadcast.

When master remixers like Chromeo have their own songs taken for a spin, you know you're in for a good time. Dirty robot rockers Guns N Bombs got their claws on "Fancy Footwork" from the upcoming Chromeo album by the same title and the results are down right freak-out inducing.

We've been pumping the new Chromeo record, Fancy Footwork (out June 19) pretty much every morning in the VICE offices. The new record is usually followed with some Rick Springfield or Supertramp, if that gives any indication of what this record can do for you. We sat down Dave 1 and Pee Thugg to introduce the new record. You can listen to "Fancy Footwork" and "Tenderoni" and you can watch a hot and sweaty live performance of "Tenderoni." If you listen to "Fancy Footwork" and don't feel the insatiable need to go buy a white suit and drive around in a Ferrari Spyder, you need some summertime fun, stat.

DJ MEHDI IS A LUCKY BOY

DJ Mehdi is a very nice fellow. His new record, Lucky Boy is a party, it's mad robotic, it's sex, drums and beats & blues and sweaty nights turning into crazed mornings. We've already introduced you to "I Am Somebody" by DJ Mehdi featuring Chromeo, now hear the Lucky Boy version of "Signatune." We'll be releasing an extended version of the final track on the record "Signatune" (Thomas Bangalter edit) later on with a vid, but enjoy this track now, would you?

Today is the day, kids. Raise your tequila glass high and toast to the release of Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo. We've been anxiously awaiting this day to share the final clip from the Black Lips' mission to Tijuana with the tune "Stranger." Featuring the mad action you've come to expect from a Black Lips clip, we also get the wisdom from a hazy but successful night in Tijuana. There is an inexplicable bit of a girl in a bikini washing a car, while Jared tells us, "It was more about the crowd than acutally us, becuase every one was part of the band." Check out the final clip and check to see if the boys are coming to play near you and become part of the band.

DYLAN HEARTS THE STREETS

Whothefuck
Bob Dylan does a radio show on XM where he plays his favorite music and riffs on what he plays - pretty much exclusively stuff from the 40s/50s/60s. And it seems he really digs Mike Skinner. In his "eye" themed episode, after Ruth Brown's "Teardrops From My Eyes" and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's "She Winked Her Eye," the Streets get an introduction unlike any we ever imagined we'd hear as Dylan fondly leads into the Streets' "Dry Your Eyes." We're pretty sure it's less than kosher to post this MP3, so grab it while you can.

3-2-1 CONTACT

Edrecvol2
Something about Busy P's "Rainbow Man" brings the old PBS show 3-2-1 Contact to mind. Perhaps it's the sense of wide-eyed discovery. Perhaps there's something in the descending synth line that stirs memories of the theme song. Whatever the case, this track off Ed Rec Vol 2 is as head-bobbingly addictive as anything Ed Banger Records has smacked us with thus far. VICE is proudly releasing Ed Rec Vol 2 for your computer to download on March 6 and for your hands to clutch to your heart on April 10.

This week on "As the Young Men Survive Tijuana," the Black Lips cruise the prostitute and Mariachi lined streets before ripping through yet another pogo-inducing track off Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo, out next Tuesday on VICE. This weeks' episode features Mexican teens screaming the words to a traditional jam played by a Tijuana Mariachi band that look less than thrilled to be there, while later the kids rock so hard they take Jared down. This clip has one of our favorite moments from Tijuana when Jared has enough taunting from one of the kids and moves his mic aside to head-butt the kid away while never missing a beat. Fitting moment for a track called "Sea of Blasphemy."

This week, another clip from the Black Lips show in Tijuana that was recorded for posterity for their first VICE release, Los Valientes Del Mundo Nuevo. In this weeks episode, Jared gets his ass smacked, two drunkards roll around on the floor in some new form of foreplay we have yet to fully understand and our buddy Felipe flashes some naked cheeks. What we learn is Tijuana is a strange place that thwarts comprehension. Who's ready to Boomerang?

PANTHERS ROAR

Panthers07
VICE is proud to present the new release from Panthers. The Trick, out April 10, roars, growls, pounces and stomps through 32 minutes of sleek and deadly rock. If you know Panthers from their 04 LP Things Are Strange, you'll recognize lead purrer Jayson Green's howl, the familiar deafening pounding from drummer Jeff Salane, the stalking, crouching bass of Geoff Garlock and the stabbing attack of Justin Cherno's guitar. If you're new to Panthers, welcome to the deafening sound coming from Brooklyn. This is the smokey basement where hard-rock, stoner-rock, hardcore, punk and balls out rock and roll come together to lash out and get down.

This fall when we saw Panthers they were playing 15 feet up in the air in a warehouse in Brooklyn, with a crew of skateboarding kids riding an indoor half-pipe on the other side of the room at the legendary KCDC skate shop. The kids stood with heads tilted back like they were watching an air show rip above them and Panthers pummeled the gathered masses with 3 minute bursts of magic, including "Uncertainly."

Zonkeys (a donkey painted like a zebra), crazy Mexican teens, mariachi bands, Tecate 40s, fights, pig piles, crowd surfing. All in the average night with the Black Lips. When we sent the boys to Tijuana to record Los Valientes Del Mundo Nuevo we knew we would return with some amazing footage, some fist pumping rock songs and images, for better or for worse, that would live in our minds forever. We're putting out the record on February 20th but you can catch some of the madness now.

CHROMEO - PRETTY YOUNG THING

Chromeo_respect1
Chromeo have been hard at work on creating a follow up album to make all the pretty young things dance, and Pitchfork has distilled the receipe for their new track, "Tenderoni":

6 cups repetitive keyboard space bass
2 cups "Staying Alive" disco guitar
3 tbsp Zapp & Roger vocoder
1 tsp cowbell
2 small bags of keyboard handclaps
1 fake fadeout

Bring space bass to a boil. Stir in disco guitar, handclaps, and vocoder until an even mixture is achieved. Sprinkle cowbell into broth. Let cool. Pour into bowl, and carefully place fadeout on top. Serves two creeps.

This music isn't for everyone. When the Boredoms came to play our Intonation festival in Chicago this summer they brought their whole family and after their incendiary set had a big family dinner. We tried to remember what it felt like before our minds were blown. They've been plowing their way to the forefront of Japan's noise-music community since 1987 and VICE loves them so much, we're reissuing 6 Boredoms records in 007.

On January 23rd we're putting out Super Roots, Super Roots 3 and Super Roots 5 and on February 20 we're releasing Super Roots 6, Super Roots 7 and Super Roots 8 into the world. These albums, EPs, singles and remixes begin with the band at their most violent and absurdist and ends with them at their most magnificently tranced-out and blissful.

120 DAYS "COME OUT, COME DOWN, FADE OUT, BE GONE"

172263639_3875c99115We wrote up a whole review of the first single from the 120 Days album, but Pitchfork's Brian Howe nailed it a lot better than we can, so you should just read it for yourself here.

"For once, why don't we elide the obvious-- in this case, Norwegian band and recent Vice signees 120 Days' superficial resemblance to certain electro-and-Krautrock forebears-- and experience "Come Out (Come Down, Fade Out, Be Gone)" as a first-order phenomenon, with its own heat and light. A lopsided parabola than spans nine tautly thrumming minutes, "Come Out" is a marvel of ethereal precision, immaculate pacing, Teutonic austerity, trance-inducing miasma, and dark euphoria. A supple motorik cadence and concentrated volleys of staccato bass inscribe concise glyphs on the air; iridescent analog synths leave ghostly phosphene trails; sine-wave guitars and judiciously deployed yet emphatic vocals push the rhythmic urgency into the steam-gouting red zone. There's a lot of song here, but no excess-- each strand is counterbalanced by another, so "Come Out" holds its perilous spin around a stable axis, twisting methodically skyward until, finally escaping gravity, it soars."

FAVOURITE SONS HANG ON

FsThis is the Favourite Sons track that always kills live, when people who don't normally pay attention at shows start jumping in place and singing along and generally acting like they're having their first beer. It's a sweet love song about breaking up a marriage and one of the finest moments on their very fine debut album "Down Beside Your Beauty."

BOREDOMS IN THE NEW YORKER PODCAST

NewyorkerSasha Frere-Jones from the New Yorker featured Boredoms in a recent issue and podcasted about it from the New Yorker site. He stretches out his thoughts on the band, their catalog, live show, and place in underground music. He also plays through a bunch of Boredoms music, including some of their brain-frying set at this year's VICE-curated Intonation Music Festival.
